GEMinar 3: Secrets to Success with Google

This special event focused on time management, goal setting, effective communication and conflict resolution. We started the session with an inspiring keynote from Nicola Yap, Lead Technical Writer for Artifact Management at Google and a current GEM Mentor. Nicola talked about her diverse life experiences and her journey that led her professional and technical writing. She talked about the importance of being an impact player by taking initiative and adapting to change. Nicola concluded by encouraging the Mentees to foster a culture of learning, follow curiosity and see change as an opportunity.

Afterwards, participants joined Breakout Rooms for the On Your Mark, Get Set, GOAL! Activity to brainstorm a measurable career-related goal and create a plan of attack that would support participants in accomplishing their goal.

In the Three Cs Panel, Google panelists, Christina, Anne, and Mackenzie gave advice based on their industry experience. Participants were able to learn about the importance of personal/professional collaboration with diverse groups, how to incorporate creative ideas in their work and how to develop critical thinking skills.

During the second Breakout Room Activity on conflict resolution, participants looked at a case study and devised a solution to conflict through critical and creative thinking.
