Introducing Our New Communications Intern, Asha Mudie!

Hello Everyone!

My name is Asha Mudie and I am your new Communications Intern for this term. I’m super excited to be joining and contributing to your community through the work that I do. I am currently in my third year of my undergraduate degree, doing an Honours Bachelor of Arts with a double major in CCIT and Political Science and a minor in Ethics, Law and Society. I was born and raised in Toronto, Canada to a Somali family.

For you to get to know a little bit about me, I’ll have to go back all the way to 2018 when I graduated high school and started my first year at the University of Toronto Mississauga. I was originally accepted as a Bachelor in Business Administration in Management student. I never really explored my interests all that much during the application period; instead, I looked at the courses I received the highest grades in for direction. I was a business-heavy student and did quite well in related disciplines, so I thought that focus would be best. However, if there’s anything I’ve learned from the university application process, it is to explore and stretch every idea and aspiration you have!

In my first year, I realized that I wasn’t excited about the program I was enrolled in, and decided it would be best for me to choose a new program. I reflected on my time in the program and found that I was more interested in the innovation, entrepreneurship, strategy and design components of business. This is when I came across the CCIT (Communications, Culture, Information and Technology) program. In my second year, I declared my place in the CCIT program. Through this program, I’ve been able to explore interests I never knew I would love, such as design and branding. I also opted to do a Political Science major because I had taken an elective in Global Politics, which led me to do a concentrated course load in International Relations. The subject of my minor, Ethics, Law and Society, always fascinated me because it challenged me in a way academics hadn’t before. One thing I realized in in switching majors was I enjoyed course work that involved brainstorming solutions to real life problems!

Fast-forwarding to today, I hope to delve more into the branding and user experience design while mixing my knowledge of global affairs and ethics. I am very eager to see where my professional degree takes me, as I believe it to be quite an interesting combination.

In my time at GEM, my goal is to help with communications and develop my systems-thinking approach to my work. I am also excited to support all the internal and external program efforts in any way I can. The best piece of advice I have for GEM girls is to always heed what makes you happy so that no matter what, you’re content with your choices. It’s worth taking the time to brainstorm about the direction you want to take in your life. In this way, you can make strides towards making your dreams come true.
