Welcome Summer GEM Interns (Part 1)

Over the next few days, we will be officially welcoming our four exceptional interns for this summer!

First up, we have Mia Hani and Emma Murray, who are both joining us as a graduate policy interns from Munk School at UofT.

Mia Hani, Master of Global Affairs, Munk School, UofT

Hello, I’m Mia. I graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a bachelor’s degree in Advertising and Public Relations, and a minor in French. I am currently a Master of Global Affairs candidate at the University of Toronto, Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. I have interned at AccuWeather in Pennsylvania as a marketing analyst, where I used qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze social media performance and studied clients’ feedback. I have also interned with Young & Rubicam Advertising Agency as an Account Assistant, where I worked to develop appropriate communication messages with the target audience to incentivize purchasing behavior.

After completing my undergraduate degree, I volunteered as an English teacher and travelled to a remote mountainous region in Wulong, China. There, I met the most underprivileged children that I have ever met and formed friendships with each child by sharing my stories and encouraging them about the possibilities for their future.

This experience deeply moved me and since then, my career goal has been to improve efforts to protect vulnerable populations, including women, children and those most marginalized in our communities.

I am thrilled to be joining GEM this summer and contributing to the development of GEM in helping girls reach their full potential. Over the summer, I will be conducting research on convening a policy symposium, conducting analysis of stakeholders at local, provincial, national and international levels, and I will also be studying the gender impact of COVID from that will help inform and strengthen Gem’s programming in the future.

Emma Murray, Master of Public Policy, Munk School, UofT

Hi All! My name is Emma and I am currently completing my Master of Public Policy at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the University of Toronto.

Prior to my Master’s degree, I received my Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from King’s University College at the University of Western Ontario with an Honours Specialization in History and Major in Political Science.

I am incredibly passionate about youth empowerment and welfare and have professional experience in this area working for the City of London, as well as with various conferences and initiatives at Western University and the University of Toronto.

I am eager to continue my learning process over this summer as a Policy Intern at Girls E-Mentorship! In this role, I will be supporting GEM’s strategic development research to advance policies to promote gender equity through mentorship in Canada. Specifically, my research includes understanding the impact of mentorship on girls through a feminist, anti-racism lens; understanding the needs of youth in rural Ontario; and conducting research and outreach to various policy makers in Canada.

Welcome to the GEM team, Mia and Emma!
