Welcome Summer GEM Interns (Part 2)

Today, we are welcoming our two summer interns who are from the Canada Summer Youth Employment Program!

Sara Malhotra, Canada Summer Youth Employment

Hi everyone! My name is Sara and I am a recent graduate from the University of Toronto where I jointly specialized in Economics and Political Science.

Being an international student in Canada, I have used my experiences to shape my dynamic perception of the world and to constructively challenge the status quo by being inquisitive and action oriented.

I previously worked at the Canadian Urban Institute as a Policy Intern where I conducted research and analysis on sustainable technology, urban community building and business analysis. I also recently served at the University of Toronto Mississauga Students Union as the Vice-President, Internal where I combined my interests for financial management with community activism.

Having an interdisciplinary educational background and a diverse range of work experience, I have become skilled in researching policy, conducting data analysis, and issuing policy briefs. I love to play chess and have a concerning addiction to desserts! I spend my free time listening to new music and trying out different cuisines of food around GTA.

I am excited to join GEM as a Program and Policy Intern this summer where I will be focusing on developing policies and processes, and supporting a Longitudinal Assessment of GEM alumnae.

Sidrah Zafar, Canada Summer Youth Employment

Hello, my name is Sidrah and I’m a summer intern at GEM. I’ve recently completed my undergraduate degree in health sciences at the University of Ottawa, and I will be starting my master’s degree in public health at Queen’s University this fall.  

I believe that health encompasses more than physical wellbeing. Through my studies, I’ve learned that health outcomes are affected by various social determinants that often have compounding impacts on different members of society.

I recently participated in a research study on the health needs of Liberian women and girls. Because of this work, I am now determined in focusing my career goal on using health data for equitable access to health resources and services for those most marginalized in our communities.

I enjoy all things chocolate and music and believe that a great cup of coffee has the potential to really brighten up my day. I love painting and drawing my favourite characters from Lion King, and I will never refuse an invite for all-you-can-eat sushi.

I am excited to be working at GEM this summer where I will be researching health issues impacting GEMgirls, along with a longitudinal assessment report of GEM alumnae. It is a privilege to work at an organization like GEM that allows talented girls to ‘stand in their power’ and realize their potential.
